We’ve got public liability insurance but we just hadn’t been bringing in enough yet for contents insurance.

Our friends responded really quickly, and will be putting on a benefit show with some amazing Brisbane bands on May 17th, and we’d really like it if you could come.

We’ll be putting up a donations button on the website shortly, which we’ll link to on our Facebook page.

If you’d like to come to the event, here’s the invitation.

There are some amazing prizes up for grabs, a bake sale, and more.

Thank you so much for your support. From total despair we’re starting to see the light again and there is nothing better than the feeling of being looked after by your community. x0

We just had a question this morning about Google Search Engine Optimisation. There is really a lot you can do yourself, so we wrote up some hints about what we think works.

1. Use WordPress for your website, it ranks well on Google. See why here.

2. Have a blog on your website. Try to keep your new content interesting to potential readers while also pumping it with search terms. Start a new category (if you’re on WordPress), call it BLOG or NEWS or UPDATES and then post new posts to that category — make sure you add that category to the menu. And in each blog post mention the keywords you want people searching for you with. Also add tags & categories, and write an excerpt in the blog post page. Here are post-writing instructions from WordPress.

3. Get your friends, colleagues, and relatives on the case. Tell them to search you on Google, then click the link they see to your website. Be wary of taking it too far though, Google has been known to remove aggressive marketers from their search engine.

4. Register your business on some business listing sites, like YELP, Hotfrog, Pinterest, FourSquare, MyRestaurant or social media business sites relevant to your business, where people can click through to view your website content after reading a little bit about you. There might be some better sites out there too (comment below if you can suggest any!).

5. Install a plugin on your website to help with SEO. YOAST do a great one. Here’s the link for their plugin for SEO.

6. Register a business address on Google places. There are some success stories you can read about how well that has worked for other businesses. Click here for more.

7. Hire an SEO specialist to do it for you, that’s what loads of people do. You might even like Ola Media to do it.

8. Read Google’s SEO Starter Guide for best practices here.

9. Get some blogs talking about your work and linking to you.

If you want to talk about this or anything else you see on this site, contact us. We love talking about your work and how we can help.

Here’s something you really ought to know if you are an admin on a Facebook page. This happens all the time, and is really simple so listen in.

As admin for your fanpage, if you hit ‘like’ on your content, it shows up that your fanpage likes it.

You may have done this in the past thinking that it would show up that your personal Facebook profile liked it. Eg “Joe Blogs likes ABC Mechanics”, and might then be good for post views. It’s not. It shows up that your page likes your page’s post (“ABC Mechanics like ABC Mechanics”), as per our example above.

So our tip is that, if you’re an admin, don’t hit ‘like’ on what you post unless you really like it and want to show the world how much you do.

What we recommend instead, is having a link as part of your fanpage’s status update. Then you can ‘Share’ it to your friends using the share button (we’ve circled it in pink below on a Dangerous Minds post).

You’ll be able to share content with friends on your personal profile then, as well as with those who’ve already liked your page, and you’ll be able to achieve more views for your content that way.

It’s just one way of doing things. Hope it helps.

Instead of deleting the duplicate Pages, you can merge them. This article will show you how.

Some of the clients we’ve been working with on Facebook social media strategy have encountered problems with duplicate Pages on Facebook, so we thought we’d write up our knowledge in the area.

It’s actually essential to your business to ensure your image on the internet remains consistent, and also that it’s easy for your customers, fans and clients to find and Like your Facebook page quickly.

Why Use The Merge Tool:

You want to target published content and ads to users who have Liked your Page. But if you have Likes on duplicates of your Page this can decentralise your efforts.

You only want to manage one Page, and it’s preferable not to lose the fans of your duplicate Pages.

This is why instead of deleting the duplicate Pages, you can merge them. However you need to have rights to your duplicate Pages to do so. If you can’t merge duplicate Pages, you can report all community or unofficial fan-controlled duplicates of your primary Page as duplicates.

Instructions on Using the Merge Tool:

Go to your Facebook Page and click “Edit Page”, then click the “Resources” tab, from there select “Merge duplicate pages”. A list will show up of any duplicate Pages that you have permission to merge into your Page. Currently, duplicate Pages must be under your control to be eligible for a merge. To gain control of community Pages or unofficial fan-controlled Pages which are the same as the official Page, you’ll need to look for the “Is this your business?” link or “Report: duplicate” link beneath the duplicate Page’s profile picture.

This process can take some time and in some cases requires an electricity bill to be scanned and uploaded to Facebook to prove beyond a doubt that you are the rightful owner. It can also take a few weeks to take effect, so you can check back in to see if you have been granted admin rights to the duplicate page later.

So you may have noticed we’ve updated the look here at Ola Media HQ. We will be rolling out this new branding over the business over the coming months.

Our new slogan ‘Who’s Afraid of Ola Media?’ is actually a tribute to a famous campaign done by Ben & Jerry’s icecream in the 1980s. The company were being bullied by bigger competitors. You can read a little bit more about it in this fantastic book.

While we are not bullied by bigger competitors, we have felt pressure in the past to conform to what they’re doing. This year is going to be different though. This year we’re taking a stand, we’re going to be different, we’re going to celebrate our uniqueness and we’re going to enjoy what being a small business means for how we can contribute within the local community too.

We want to shout it loud and clear that we’re not afraid of the amazing things set to happen as we grow this year, and you shouldn’t be either.

Dealing with us is a breeze, we really do care about your needs, we offer competitive pricing on graphic design and digital media services, and we take time and care in our customer relations.

We look forward to building great things with you in Brisbane, in Australia, and beyond in 2012. And Happy Chinese New Year! What an exciting year to be in. Who’s afraid of Ola Media? NOT US!

These two pics below are of local Charters Towers legends. Lester, the man in the hat with the receipts, kept telling me not to look too closely because that hat was his private filing cabinet. He also told me he made a 50% alcohol homebrew rum because regular rum wasn’t cutting it. He passed out after drinking 2 glasses of his own homebrew rum waking up hours later with a name: The Lester Cluster. Why The Lester Cluster?
